Friday, Noonish

Friday October 5th

Temperature 10C, winds, 35k

It’s 10 in the morning on a blustery Friday in the heart of Heartland America…I caught up with Vanessa Fishchbuch and Pam Huack from team 4 after their 6pm to midnight ride. It was not a great evening. They felt pretty lucky that they avoided the rain until after 11 – lots of headwind, but no rain. Then the clouds opened up, and they spent the last half hour head to head with Mother Nature.

This morning we finally contacted the ambulance about half an hour ago – Mike Eby said the guys on Team 5 rode through rain and strong headwinds until about 4:30, when the moisture abated. It’s a slow day, but progress is being made. With each pedal stroke, and each breath, we inch ever closer to our goal – Austin by next Thursday.

I’m waiting right now in the Hilltop Restaurant in Jordan for some take-out. We’re going to bring a dozen Ham ‘n Eggers and a carafe of coffee to the riders and support team. I’m sure after the cold morning, some warm food would be welcomed.

12:30 pm

The Ham ‘n Eggers were a hit! It was a welcome respite for Mike and Sara in the ambulance, and Cheryl-Ann and Mike in the Motorhome.

We caught up with team 1 about 20 kilometres west of Jordan. They were 5 hours into the ride, and pushing about 18 km an hour toward their destination. A tire kiss caused Maureen Bildfell to hit the tarmac. Aside from being surprised, she was back on her bike in about 5 minutes, and the team continued.

Team 2 has just left en route to Miles City. They’re looking at a 40 km/hr headwind, with gusts to 60. Barring rain, it will will be a slow, steady day. If the rain kicks in again, it could get really unpleasant.

KUDOS to Maureen, been there done that. Her desire to just grin thru the shock of seeing the pavement headed your way says a ton about her character and drive to keep going. The weather really sounds like sucks but I can pretty much guarantee a lousy day of riding is so much better than a great day at work!!!
Keep your spirits up.

Team 4 and Team 5 need to be switched.

THANKS.

Besides Teams 4 and 5 being switched (team listing on cover page), there was another minor error in the morning update. Patti Morris is actually on Team 5. Don must have meant Pam Hauck who is on Team 4 along with Vanessa.

Hello everyone, Team 4 here; Chris G.AKA Cow Shit, Jim AKA CF, Graham AKA Polka Dot, Doug AKA O2, Vanessa AKA Sheryl, Pam AKA ?? (suggestions welcome) . Thankyou all for posting comments and kind words.
Things have been going well so far except that we have discovered that Team 4 (the Team with more) does not do nights well. Big drive after our first ride on Wednesday searching for a hotel - who would have thought that Shelby Montana would be booked at 10pm on a Wed. night. Then last night - 6hrs all up hill, winds and ended in torrential rain. BUT....we aren't Team 5 who had to endure it for their entire 6 hr shift. Way to go Team 5 - you make us proud.
But...Team 3....what is your issue with Team 4????!!! We had to have Pam's tummy pumped due to "bad" water.
We are also still trying to nail down the toilet paper/vaseline culprits.
We are currently in Mile City, Montana resting up for our midnight - 6am ride.

Bye for today.

Hi Eli, Taine and Josh, Mum here. Thankyou so much for your letter - it's so nice to hear from you. I hadn't had a chance to get to a computer to see it but then media guy Don copied it and showed it to me this morning. It made my day!!

We are all doing fine - last night was mostly a good ride - quite a few hills though! There were lots of deer in the ditches - and little mice would run out onto the road in front of us. We zoomed down a BIG hill to cross the Missouri River - abit nerve racking as one of my lights had died and I was worried about the deer.
Take care of each other... and send me more messages!

Lots of love, Mum. (Vanessa Team 4)

Hello world,

It's Team 5 here waiting in Miles (1.6 kilometer) City MT for the dinner hour.
We are finally defrosted after last night and in fine shape. Windy like crazy down here. It was a rather interesting night with rain, sleet, 34F but the entire team pulled a fantastic 109 Km ride.
We are tremendously proud of the entire CTAPP team and organization. What an event.
We will finally see daylight riding atarting tomorrow morning at 6 somewhere in Wyoming.
Cheers for now!

Team 5 Here:

It's Bobbi and I would first like to thank all of friends and family for checking out the blog and posting comments. The Jim Stick postings are apparently being enjoyed by more than team 5. And by the way, the 'Jim Stick' is having an truly excellent adventure!

A funny thing happened last night during our rainy ride. Not only were there lots of deer sightings, we also had SALAMADER SIGHTINGS! Maurice, quite enamored by the little critters, hammered on the brakes to take a look, not realizing I was right on his wheel. A few choice words escaped my lips as I hit the pavement. As I'm lying on my side, body twitching to try to get out of the pedals, Maurice is checking out the cute little salamander, and Patti, not wanting the salamander to get run over by the ambulance is trying to shoe him to the side of the road. Finally, Norbert and Warren came to my rescue and helped me out of my pedals.

Chris reflecting on the view of it all the next day got the giggles. So it wasn't too funny at the time, but looking back now, I'm sure it was a sight to behold.

It's Team Five again - Patti here. You don't hear from us for a while and then you can't shut us up. I figured I had to add my two cents, while I realize the salamander issue may call into question my team-iness, I am hoping that all of you Greenpeace supporters, PETA folks and Tibetan monks appreciate my efforts. Sadly, we probably passed 20 more flattened on the road after that...

As Bobbi and others have said, we sure appreciate all the support and comments from others. A million thanks for this. Kate, dad, Claire, Carol - you rock! And Jim it is fun to have you with us! A truly excellent adventure!

Hola Team 5!

We were all wondering how your ride went last night after several hours of not hearing from you. Seems like you were Superheros to bike that far in those conditions!
Way to go Team 5! You all did a great job with the radio interviews too!

I'm getting very little work done these days because I'm so busy checking the blog, tuning into radio interviews or telling others how to do the same!

Have a good sleep and keep smiling up those hills!
Love you Chris,
Janice

First, let me say, thanks Don, for keeping us posted on how all the riders are doing and what they are having to endure. Reading the blogs and comments, I realize what a huge commitment you have all made to raise funds to support cancer survivors like myself. Not being home with your families for Thanksgiving is just the tip of the iceberg!!! I just want you all to know how much I appreciate your incredible commitment to making this happen, and I look forward to seeing you in Austin to celebrate with you on your success. Special thanks to my rider, Wes Tatebe!! See you in Austin!!

Sorry to hear the weather has turned but from what I have been reading the riders are very determined and will give mother nature a run. Keep up the great ride and as Robbin said just think of the warm swimming pool at the end.

Another correction. It was team #2 that left at noon (Arthurs Angels) and battled the headwinds.

Just sending a shout out to all you riders, volunteers and your warriors (when they join you). What a great thing you guys and gals are doing, keep it up. :)

Taine.
Thanks for the message mom. Don't run over any mice and watch out for deer in the ditches. I hope the weather gets better for your upcoming rides. School is has been fun and we are on a three day weekend. Remember to drink lots of water and ride fast.

Love Taine.
